An X-ray of my heart taken last December ...
A new vet came on board at the practice and she has experience with ultrasounds, so on Tuesday I went to have one done. Mom had to wait until today for a consultation, though. My vet said it showed my heart disease is advanced, and what I have is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, like my dear friend Pixie (Daisy's sister) did - not the dilative kind, after all.
I'm still supposed to take the same medicines I've been taking, and the vet wants to see me about every six weeks. My mom was kind of numb - not crying or anything - but the vet rushed to give her a hug and stuff, so on the way home she got to thinking that it's probably worse than she realized at first. But ever since last December, she hasn't taken any day with me for granted.
She says every day with me is a gift! Can you imagine? I think maybe she loves me!

Doood...the Woman knows how your Mom feels. She says looking at that x-ray was like looking into the past. The Cat Who Came Before Me had an x-ray that looked just like that. But they got her on the right meds and she was happy and comfortable for a long time. You don't wanna be chasing red dots or lookin' at pictures of really really sweet girl kitties, but you can do pretty well as long as you take your meds and see your stabby person.
Don't be surprised that your Mom loves you. The Woman has a little crush on you, too... ;)

Oh, Luxie...Teri knows all about HCM, having had 4 cats with it...her favorite boy, Bo (see posts on Mar 30 09 and Dec 18 08) had it, as did his sister and brother. And all of them lived a long life...but she also lost a kitty to it at 9 months of age. You just have to take it a day at a time...Your mommy can call Teri anytime if she needs to chat...and hugs, even from vets, are wonderful!

My cat Jake was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy when he was 10 and put on a calcium channel blocker and lived to be 18. It is serious and needs to be monitored, but doesn't have to be a death sentence....I came from Cactus Jack's blog....

You had posted on my blog asking about other medications. A calcium channel blocker does help control blood pressure. I wouldn't want to question your vet and what they are doing. Jake saw an internist vet and the meds worked out well for him. He didn't die of heart disease but of old age kidney disease, so it is possible to live with heart disease. I just wanted to let you know that he had years after his diagnosis...
